Ronan’s Sheep Herding Debut!!!

ronans-first-place-first-trial-10-22-16

I was encouraged to post a brag, although I cannot take much credit. 🙂

I love taking Ronan for herding lessons, allowing him to enjoy doing what he was bred to do.  It is no surprise that Ronan’s skill level ronan-herding-sheepprogresses much more quickly than mine.  Herding does not mean chasing.  It’s difficult to move and control livestock with ease and elegance, without adding unnecessary stress. Ronan’s genes offer natural ability and finesse!

This past weekend was amazing.  I am thrilled to share that Ronan took 1st place in his class at his very first sheep herding trial!  Special thanks to Karen Malloy for sharing her expertise and showing Ronan’s (and her) great talents!ronan-herding-ducks-10-16

If you’ve never watched dogs herding sheep (or ducks or cattle), I highly recommend it.  Find a trial and go!  It is truly a wonderful sight to see this beautiful and ancient farming technique with your own eyes.  I promise, you won’t be sorry!

What jobs/skills were involved in your dogs’ history?  Look for some activities where you can work on YOUR dogs’ natural instincts.  They will love it and you will too!

Make time to enjoy your dogs every day!

Are You the Leader?

heeling exercise

Stacie Heeling Elsa P.

Here’s a QUICK review to make sure you are a leader to your dog:

  • Use confident body language – stand tall whenever you are giving commands
  • Give clear commands – don’t ask your dog to do something, but don’t yell either
  • Always follow through – if you have given a command follow through until your dog responds
  • Set him up for success – challenge your dog to advance his training skill level by adding time and distractions within reason
  • Praise appropriately – if petting is too exciting and your dog wiggles out of position switch to verbal praise
  • Give feedback (eye contact, praise, reward) while your dog is doing an exercise – not afterwards
  • Correct (gentle leash or voice correction) while your dog is making a mistake – not afterwards
  • Love him up at the appropriate time – did you ask your dog to earn your attention or did he come over and nudge you into it?
  • Go through doorways first
  • Make sure YOU are in charge of your walks – not the other way around

8 week Henry practicing “LOOK”

If you and your dog have slipped into some negative habits tether him to you for a few days – this is an easy way to remind your dog that you are the leader and he is the follower.  Keep things in check for a happy healthy relationship for years to come!

Yours in good training,

Stacie & Ronan

Got 5?

A short video of Ronan’s quick retrieving skills.  This is what we do when I have limited time to exercise Ronan.  I’m not sure that I captured his tremendous speed.  Enjoy!

Busy Times for All…

ronan-pre-eventLike most of you, Ronan and I have been pretty busy lately.  Some of our time has been spent: at shelter fund raisers, street fairs, dog shows, herding practice (soon to be trials), working, volunteering, tending to family, and just trying to stay healthy and SANE!

I’m not sure if I have company, but even thought though the weather is fairly nice I find fall to be a little hectic and stressful!

Hang in there and put one foot in front of the other.  Take a few minutes for yourself each day (as I was told tonight by my good friend, Kim!), breath and know that life is good, tomorrow is another day, and Ronan and I are thinking of you and thank you for your support!

Until next week,

Stacie & Ronan
