Time to Spray!

EEEEWWWWWW!!!

I JUST picked this icky tick off of Ronan! (NO LIE). Time to spray. I haven’t sprayed for a couple of months and I’m overdue because Wondercide really helps to keep the tick population at a minimum. I will be going out to spray the yard & trees with Wondercide ASAP.

The results from Ronan’s annual exam last week were terrific! He’s healthy, his titers were good and heartworm, LYME, ERLICHIOSIS, ANAPLASMOSIS (3 terrible tick-born diseases) came back NEGATIVE! Wahoo!

Don’t take a chance with your pet. Wondercide helps keep the tick (and other critter) population WAY down. It’s prime tick time and time to spray!

Thanks, Wondercide, for keeping my baby safe & healthy!

Wondercide – Company & Product Review

It’s finally here – my first product review & information! I will continue to bring you reviews and information only on products that are Royal Canine Dog Training LLC tested and approved – that’s right, I actually use these products myself!

I have not only carefully chosen this first company and it’s products, but I am excited to bring them to you.

Wonderful WONDERCIDE!

I have been using their Natural Outdoor Flea & Tick Sprays for years! I am not a big fan of chemicals. I realize sometimes they are unavoidable, but I try to avoid them whenever possible. This is especially true for my buddy, Ronan. Ronan is a a 4 1/2 year old Border Collie. A few years back Ronan was bringing in many ticks. Not always embedded in him, often he had just picked them up from being in the bushes. I haven’t used any of the popular chemical topicals on him due to a bad experience with a previous dog (another story for another time). I knew about Wondercide and liked their philosophy and and avoidance of chemicals. I ordered the yard spray and bought a pre-mix sprayer. I was in for a pleasant surprise. It took me less than 1 1/4 hours to spray all of the trees and bushes I could reach, and any grass in shady areas. This was in the front and back of a large yard. What happened next was truly amazing…

The previous 2 weeks I had found 9 ticks in or on Ronan, and this was from our own yard! After spraying the property with Wondercide I found ZERO on him in the weeks to follow! I was amazed! Not only did it do a tremendous job reducing the tick population, but it was easy, fast, not messy, and was a fraction of the cost of hiring a professional. I bought a large container and used it 4 times, and had enough to give to my neighbor to spray her yard (who is now a Wondercide user & believer, after finding a tick on her 2 year old son prior to using Wondercide!)

I don’t mean to sound like a commercial, but if I’m going to suggest something to you it’s because I’ve used it and believe in it. The active ingredient is cedar oil, which kills and repels not only fleas & ticks, but hundreds of other harmful insects (while being safe for beneficial insects)!

Health decisions regarding your pet should be determined by you and your vet, and I am in no way attempting to interfere with medical decisions. Wondercide products are chemical-free alternatives (or additions) that can help reduce the population of many of the dangerous insects lurking in your yard.  Home, human and other wonderful products are also available.  Please check them out.  I hope you benefit from this company and it’s amazing products as much as I do!

Thanks for reading,

Close Critter Call…

Groundhog vs. Border Collie

Close call, but luckily Ronan comes when called! Teach your dog a great recall. If your dog gets bitten you may need to booster his rabies vaccine (even if he had one this year). Check with your vet and keep your dogs safe. Those critters are out there and some have great hiding spots!

To Vaccinate or Not?

So much conflicting information is everywhere. We try to do the right thing. We research (mainly on the web – for better or worse), we talk to friends. Everyone has an opinion.

When I am asked for my opinion, I am careful to be clear that it is my opinion. I am not a vet – only an experienced dog person with enough knowledge to be just slightly dangerous (LOL). Joking aside, it’s a serious topic that needs some of your time and understanding to get through it all.

Not all dogs have to be vaccinated for the same things. Age, location, and health, among other things, should be taken into account for each vaccine.

I was at a client’s recently. The puppy was about 3 months old. She had a routine reminder from the vet regarding upcoming vaccines. Including the combo, it listed 10 due for the puppy this month! (The combo was five and five additional ones). My client wasn’t sure if the pup would be getting all at the next visit. NO NO NO!

Let me explain something. The same information on the reminder cards is sent to each new puppy owner. It’s fairly standard.  It’s to make sure they cover all possible vaccines for your dog. However, that doesn’t mean that you have to get all of those vaccines! You need to see what’s recommended and reasonable. And you should NOT get them all together.

  1. Set some time aside to speak with your vet to discuss each one. If your vet doesn’t give you the time or understanding of your concern, find a new one!
  2. Ask your vet if he/she thinks your dog is at high risk for contraction without the vaccine. If you live in CA your dog’s risk for Lyme is drastically lower than if you live in NJ.
  3. Consider what a groomer or kennel would require, if you ever plan to use them. If your dog is not social with other dogs is Bordetella necessary?
  4. Ask your vet to split up the vaccines into multiple visits. Not only do you not want to flood his poor little system with a ton of foreign vaccines but what it there was reaction? If multiple were given at the same time how would you know which one caused it?
  5. Avoid letting your dog get vaccinated while under anesthesia. How would you know if there is a reaction?
  6. After the initial puppy vaccine protocol, ask your vet about getting titers instead of vaccines in the future. You can’t titer for all vaccines, but if the antibody level is already high then your dog might not need the vaccine!

It’s a ton of information, and it is ever changing thanks to new illnesses being introduced to our area and outbreaks that occur from time to time. I’m not at all suggesting that you don’t vaccinate. Some are necessary. I’m just hoping that you can avoid OVER vaccinating.

Talk to experienced dog people. Talk to breeders. Learn as much as you can from people who have been there and understand the decisions you are facing.

Then, talk to your vet. There should be no better advocate for your dog than your vet! Together the two of you can design an appropriate game plan for your precious pup!

Love them, cherish them, and keep them safe!
