Puppies at play
If I had a dollar for every time someone said to me “If I had done THAT things would’ve gone so much better” I’d probably be rich!
Introducing dogs can sometimes be a little stressful – for people and dogs alike! For starters, first consider why you are introducing them: Is it a new dog you’d like to offer a forever home to? Is it a neighbor’s dog that might be a good play date option for your dog? Do you simply think that all dogs need to have doggy friends?
Make sure your reasons are justified. Thinking that your dog must have doggy friends is not a good reason! NOT ALL DOGS WANT TO HAVE DOG FRIENDS! Some would prefer the company of their humans. This should be respected! If not, you could be looking at a fight (YIKES!).
1st walk!
If your reasons are valid, and your dog seems to like other dogs, you can minimize the stress (and hopefully prevent a fight) by following a few easy steps:
1) Meet up with your friend and dog on neutral territory. This could be a park, a street around the corner, or anywhere unfamiliar to both dogs. Front yards, back yards and inside of home is NOT a good place for the initial introduction!
2) Immediately start walking together. This helps to send a message that they are part of the same pack and is a great place for some initial bonding to take place. Walk confidently and remember – this is a business walk with a very important purpose!
3) If all seems to be going well, get closer and closer as you continue. Any unwarranted snarling, snapping or other ill behavior should be corrected immediately.

4) Be confident as you allow them to greet on a loose leash. A tight leash may send the wrong message and cause a problem.
5) Bring them to one of their properties and walk onto it as though they are a pack, both belonging there.
6) If things are still going well you may decide to let them play loose in a fenced in yard or area. How you proceed depends on the dogs. Think about how you would break up an altercation should one occur (a yell? a shaker can? a blast of water from a hose???)
7) Finally, if they’ve passed all of the above tests, they may walk into the home together, both on leash to start.
8) When in doubt call in a professional to evaluate and help!

Unofficial End of Summer:(
/0 Comments/in Uncategorized /by info@royalk9.comSad but true, summer is nearing the end. Most kids have started back to school. The weather still feels like summer (93 today!) and there are still plenty of days left to have fun in the sun. Be careful! The pre-fall rush has begun. Cars are racing and people are running late to work and school. Keep everyone safe – dogs, kids, the elderly…by taking a breath and trying to slow down.
Stay tuned…in an upcoming post I will share how Ronan & I celebrated the end of summer (complete with pics!)

Get Ready for Fall Events!
/0 Comments/in Uncategorized /by info@royalk9.comDog Fundraiser
Fall is almost here – get ready for some fun outdoor events! Starting in September (um, which starts today – YIKES!) there are a few that Ronan and I will be participating in and would love for you to stop by and say HI!
The first busy weekend is September 19th & 20th. Both of these events are fundraisers for two local
New puppy friends
shelters. On Saturday we’ll be at Horseshoe Lake in Succasunna for Puptoberfest from 11-5. Puptoberfest benefits the animals at 11th Hour Rescue. It’s a great event along the side of the lake. Each year we seem to outperform the last!

Sunday the 20th we will be at Lurker Park in East Hanover for Mutts Mania. Mutts Mania is a fund raiser for the animals at Mt. Pleasant Animal Shelter. I’ve attended both events for many years and am happy to support the shelters and especially the adoption of animals in need.
Tell all of your friends to come out and support these great animal causes. And if you know of anyone looking to adopt a new furry family member please send them over!
Great Dog Event!
October 3rd we’ll be at Bottle Hill Day in Madison. This is an amazing street fair that draws 10-20,000 people! Each year has grown so much that they’re talking about adding additional streets to make it even bigger! My table is usually located on Central Ave near Main Street but I will not get my placement assignment until just before the event. Please check with me the day before so I can tell you where I’ll be. (It’s best to text – I’ll be running like crazy!). Wear comfortable shoes – there will be lots of walking and lots to see – tons of vendors of all kinds, bands, great food, and last year they had a beer garden! Of course I missed that – minding my own table:). Bottle Hill Day runs from 10-5.
So, don’t sit home with nothing to do! Dogs are welcome at all events so be sure to stop by – Ronan and I will be waiting!
Hug your dogs (and other furry friends),

Fun with Pictures!
/0 Comments/in Uncategorized /by info@royalk9.comPeek a boo Ronan!
I’ve been trying to take more pictures of my dog to show the world how photogenic he is! What came to mind is that I constantly use commands while doing so, which not only helps me get the perfect shot, but also teaches and challenges Ronan with new things.
Our wonderful dogs are with us for a decade or so, and unfortunately, that time flies by much too quickly. Take as many photos as you can so you can remember your dogs in various stages of their lives. And when doing so, use the commands you’ve taught them!
Try new things: I’ve never asked Ronan to wear a mask or doo-rag before. Who knew he would be so agreeable? It’s fun, it’s good training practice, and it creates something that you will always have to remember your wonderful pooch!
Remember to hug your dogs!

Car Running with Air on is Still NOT Safe
/0 Comments/in Uncategorized /by info@royalk9.comKeep the car cool!
We’ve heard it a million times before: “Don’t leave your dog locked in a hot car!”. We know that advice is solid, yet every year dogs lose their lives by suffocating in a car that got too hot.
I’ve heard of people leaving dogs in a locked, running car with the air conditioning on. I just came upon a Facebook post where a well-meaning owner had done this with a sign that asked other well-meaning people to Not smash the window of the car, the dog is fine, the air is on and thanks! This scenario has never really sat well with me. I guess with good reason.
Ready for work!
I recently read about a situation where a police dog in California lost his life. The K-9 officer left the car running with the windows up and air conditioning on. Sadly, the air conditioning failed and the dog suffocated. How tragic. What a terrible loss to everyone, especially the handler and the entire community that this wonderful dog helped to protect. It could’ve been avoided.
My awesome dog, Ronan, often comes to work with me. He helps me in ways with certain cases that I cannot duplicate without him. Every day I have to decide whether it is safe to bring him. As much as I love having him with me, I must always put his safety first.
Ready & waiting!
I cannot tell you the number of times I did NOT run into the store I was passing to grab that one quick thing because Ronan was with me and the weather was warmer than my comfort level. Keep in mind, I’m always basically prepared by checking the weather, getting new batteries for his crate fan, fresh ice block for his crate fan, making sure he has fresh water, opening windows and sunroof (sometimes even the back hatch in someone’s driveway), using various sun-blockers, and parking in the shade. Sometimes I even put a frozen plastic seltzer water bottle in his crate for Ronan to lay next to if he wants.
Things sometimes happen, and trusted machinery sometimes fails. Don’t risk your dog’s life. When in doubt, leave your dog home!
Keep them safe 365 days a year! They’re too important not too!

Dog Food Recalls
/0 Comments/in Uncategorized /by info@royalk9.comThere have been numerous dog food recalls over the past few years, and another one recently. It’s can sometimes be difficult to get information on which foods are being recalled. I have signed up to receive free email alerts from the following:
dogfoodadvisor.com
I suggest you do the same. They have been very good at getting alerts out quickly.
If any of you have other trusted resources, please email them to me and I will spread the word. There’s nothing more important than keeping our dogs happy, healthy, and SAFE!

It’s a Dog Show!!!
/0 Comments/in Uncategorized /by info@royalk9.comBest in Show
Thanks to all who stopped out to visit us at the Twin Brooks Kennel Club Dog Show! I really enjoy dog shows, even if I’m not showing a dog at the moment.
This year was great. I won’t bore you with all the LONG details, but each day had a different winner. The first was a beautiful Irish Setter, shown here.
The second day, a French Bulldog took Best in Show. Obviously, these are two very different breeds of dogs, but both are beautiful in their own way, and each was the closest match to the AKC breed standard according to their respective judges.
If you look at this picture of the two Bulldogs, you might think that they are being judged against each other. In fact, each is being judged separately against the AKC breed standard. Whichever the judge thinks more closely represents the breed standard is the one put up by the judge.
Two Bullys in the Ring!
At the end of the day, you get to see so many dogs representing many breeds and get some understanding of the history behind your breed(s).
Don’t knock dog show people. They are trying their best to help dogs in general by breeding to a standard and eliminate genetic health issues, to the best of their ability.
See you at the next show!
